Eileen and Nicole got married at Springfort Hall, co. Cork. They liked the location, it's was handy for both families coming from Cork and Limerick.
Kind words first because I like when people are happy with my work!
“Nicole came across Joanna online, Nicole isn’t a fan of having her photo taken and loved Joanna’s style of photos being natural. We were also anxious to have someone who would be comfortable with a same-sex couple. On the day Joanna and Anna were brilliant and Joanna, in particular, was on hand to just tell us to take a few minutes away from the madness and have 20 minutes to ourselves. We’d probably never have thought of that and it was nice to have someone to point us in the right direction. We are delighted with the photos from the day”
Thank you, Anna, for your help!
Before we go into the wedding day you must read about how they met and about the proposal!
“We meet through a mutual friend (who went on to be Eileen's bridesmaid Gemma) we met on a night out and on a few other occasions. Eileen was organising a 12 pubs of Christmas and invited Nicole and her bridesmaid Kate down to Cork for it. Kate thought Eileen was cracking onto her and her ego is only coming to terms with the fact that I wasn’t now. We haven’t had a day since December 27th 2009 where we haven’t been in contact. Had a few weeks keeping it on the down low cause Gemma had warned me off Nicole – I don’t know why – I’m a lovely girl.
Nicole proposed on the 28/5/2016 at Rocky Bay in Cork. She obviously had been planning this for a few weeks and had been ring shopping and the plan was to propose in Orlando in November 2016. She couldn’t cope with the nerves of it all and brought it forward. We went down to the beach for a swim, had an argument in the car on the way down which didn’t help her nerves. After the swim we were just strolling around the beach and when I was down at the water she was doing something up behind me on the sand, I shouted up at her that “what are you doing writing will you marry me in the sand” which is exactly what she was doing, always one to ruin the moment. I thought she was messing until she produced a ring. “
Nicole and Eileen had viewed a few venues and just by chance one day went to Springfort Hall for lunch. The couple were sold straight away, the staff were incredibly nice and helpful and they were only popping in for lunch. As they left they met Paul and explained they were getting married and would make an appointment to come and view it, there was a wedding there that day and he brought them around and showed them the venue immediately despite obviously being up to the walls busy. Eileen and Nicole literally left there and had decided it was for them within 2 minutes. They wanted a venue that was small and intimate where there wouldn’t be a massive amount of people passing through and Springfort offered the option to essentially book the venue out which was ideal for them.
The desired style or theme for the day.
Eileen and Nicole wanted a relaxed day with more of a party atmosphere. They linked love birds in between birdcage centrepieces and the invitations. Eileen tried a Harry Potter theme but was shot down early ;)
How Eileen and Nicole picked their wedding dresses, shoes and jewellery.
Eileen – I am a fairly decisive person once my mind is made up I just go with it and in sticking with that I went to one shop. I got my dress in Cinderellas Closet in Cork, I couldn’t speak any higher of the staff. Shauna actually picked out my dress I wouldn’t have chosen it for myself in a million years. My advice would be don’t overthink it, don’t bring too many people cause you’ll get bogged down with opinions and trust the staff, they know what they’re doing. Have an open mind about styles of dress, we both ended up in dresses we would never have thought we would have opted for. Shoes – I got mine Debenhams online, I’m not a regular wearer of heels so just went for something comfortable, I was in a pair of toms come dancing time:) I didn’t have much jewellery but what I had I got in Azure in Cork City who are incredibly talented at what they do and have a fabulous bridal range
Nicole – I got my dress in Lilac Rose Bridal in Limerick. It was an Eliza Jane Howel. My dress was a vintage 1940s style which I've always loved but would have never thought suited me. Just like Eileen said, trust the staff and try on different styles just cause you think something won't suit you doesn’t mean it won't and what you think you might have your heart set may not actually be for you. I went with Rachel Simpson shoes, I wanted a vintage t bar style to match my dress, I had spotted them online but held off to see could I find anything in the shops. When I couldn’t I decided not to settle and treated myself. My jewellery was from Matthew Stephens in Limerick and was a present from my mom, I kept it simple with a pearl bracelet and earrings to match.
Hair and Make-up
Eileen – my hair was done by Laura O Mahony who owns Biba in Bishopstown. I’m fairly laid back and just wanted it away and out of my face for the day as it can be a fairly unruly mop of hair. I had a veil so I wanted something that worked with it on and off and she was brilliant.
My make up was done by Julieanne O Mahony who is my beautician for years, she knows me and what I want better than myself so I’m pretty sure I gave her no instructions. The two girls were brilliant on the day and I think the fact that I knew both of them really helped me as any little wobbles and losing my life throughout the morning they both just settled me straight away.
Nicole – my hair was done by The Upstyle Junkie who is based out of Mallow. I went with my hair down to the side to match the vintage theme and my hair is always tied up so I wanted something different for the day. Make up was done by Emma Sheehan (facesbyemma) who is my bridesmaid's sister and a close friend of mine for years. I wanted my make up to be natural, as with Eileen having someone who knows me was a massive help.
The best advice they can give about flowers is don’t spend too much and go with a smaller florist who is willing to put the time and effort into your arrangements at a fraction of the cost of the bigger florist chains. And ask yourself what flowers were used at the last wedding you attended? Bet you can't remember!!! Which means the guests at your wedding won't either…
"Our flowers were done by ‘Flowers by Jasmine’ in Blarney. As with a lot of others parts of the day, we went for Jasmine because we use her regularly. Nicole loves flowers so she took the lead on these. We wanted pastel coloured large flowers so a mix of Dahlias and Peonies made up the majority of our bouquets along with some white roses and baby breath. They were hand tied and pinned with a vintage brown hessian roll. The bridesmaids were smaller versions of our bouquets along with button holes for our immediate families. We filled birdcages with a mixture of flowers including Nicole’s favourites Gerbera. The birdcages lined the aisle for the outdoor ceremony and they were used as some of the table centrepieces for the meal.
Nicole came across The Minicake company on facebook and they loved the idea of the cake table they were offering. Instead of just one big cake, the couple had one tier, two-tiered as well as cupcakes, cake pops and macaroons. It was just something a little bit different and it was a part of the day that drew so many comments.
The most memorable moment from the day.
Nicole "The first glance – I knew I wanted one beforehand because we’re both fairly emotional and I’m so glad we did it, I was the most nervous I had ever been and getting to spend those few minutes with Eileen helped ground me and I think the pictures capture that moment"
Eileen "The ceremony–I loved the ceremony, it was very us, relaxed, emotional, honest with plenty of laughs thrown in. But the entire day really was amazing.
What, if anything, Nicole and Eileen would change about their wedding day.
"We wouldn’t change anything. The day was really uniquely us. We decided early what we wanted from the day and suited us. I would certainly advise couples to go with what is for them on the day and don’t get sidetracked trying to please other people. It’s your day and you’ll only do it once."
